Coaxial lighting is a specialized illumination technique used in industrial image processing and optical systems. In this type of lighting, the light source and camera are arranged so that the light travels along the same axis. This method is particularly useful for highlighting fine details and irregularities on surfaces.

The basic principles of coaxial lighting are as follows:

  1. Light Source: Typically, intense and directed light sources like LEDs or lasers are used. The light from the source is directed towards a semi-transparent mirror or beam splitter.

  2. Semi-Transparent Mirror (Beam Splitter): This component allows part of the light to pass through while reflecting the rest. The light from the source passes through or is reflected by the semi-transparent mirror towards the object.

  3. Object: The illuminated object is at the center of the coaxial lighting setup. The light reflected from the object travels back through the same semi-transparent mirror to the camera.

  4. Camera: The camera captures the light reflected from the object to create the image. The coaxial arrangement makes small details and irregularities on the surface more visible.

Advantages of Coaxial Lighting:
