Coaxial lighting is a specialized illumination technique used in industrial image processing and optical systems. In this type of lighting, the light source and camera are arranged so that the light travels along the same axis. This method is particularly useful for highlighting fine details and irregularities on surfaces.
The basic principles of coaxial lighting are as follows:
-
Light Source: Typically, intense and directed light sources like LEDs or lasers are used. The light from the source is directed towards a semi-transparent mirror or beam splitter.
-
Semi-Transparent Mirror (Beam Splitter): This component allows part of the light to pass through while reflecting the rest. The light from the source passes through or is reflected by the semi-transparent mirror towards the object.
-
Object: The illuminated object is at the center of the coaxial lighting setup. The light reflected from the object travels back through the same semi-transparent mirror to the camera.
-
Camera: The camera captures the light reflected from the object to create the image. The coaxial arrangement makes small details and irregularities on the surface more visible.
Advantages of Coaxial Lighting:
- High Contrast: Fine details such as scratches, pits, and other defects on the surface become more visible.
- Uniform Illumination: Provides homogeneous lighting on the object, enhancing the accuracy of image processing algorithms.
- Reduction of Glare and Reflections: Since directly reflected light is not captured by the camera, glare and unwanted reflections are minimized.
Applications of Coaxial Lighting:
- Electronics and PCB Inspection: Examining errors and small components on circuit boards.
- Microscopy: Visualizing cellular-level details.
- Machine Vision Systems: Inspecting product quality in industrial automation systems.
- Surface Analysis: Detecting defects on metal, plastic, or glass surfaces.
Coaxial lighting is particularly preferred in applications where surface characteristics are critical and significantly enhances the performance of image processing systems.
